Well, I am back in Afghanistan. I am currently at FOB Phoenix located in Kabul.
This is a different life indeed...12-16 hour days are the norm, and your escape is sleep. While contractors on the bases aften have decent accomodations, your traveling contractors (like me) whole world besides work is confined to a bunk or cot. What is amazing is how much trouble these guys will go to "to block the world out". Its warm over here, and at least for me, moving air is nice. But a lot of the contractors literally enclose themselves in a "cave" in their bottom bunks, using blankets, sheets, cardboard, or whatever to establish a sense of privacy...and to me, that cuts off the airflow. At Phoenix, I currently am in a bottom bunk in a K-Span (think huge metal, round-topped building, like a hanger), but see no need for those extremes. I do use the bunk frame above me to hang various things (towel, washcloth, etc) but I don't try to close myself in. I like to be aware of my surroundings, and you can't do that all closed up in your bunk. On the other hand, some of the contractors have gone to extremes with their living quarters here...46" LCD TV, Blueray, and satellite dish for TV and Internet brings all the comforts of home. Add a compact fridge, microwave, etc, and I can see how for some, the days fly by over here.
